The Squash Section of Lagos Country Club on Sunday ended a three-month Squash Training Clinic for both its new and junior members with Gbenga Olayemi winning the training session, Akin Akinkugbe was runner up.

The Squash Clinic, which was sponsored by West African Lifting Equipment Service, also produced Darasimi Bamkole as the most promising junior player, followed closely by Hazel Hadison.

All the four players received squash rackets and branded T-shirts as prizes.

At the closing ceremony, the General Manager of the sponsoring company, Mr Chukwuma Ifebigh urged the 30 participants not to relent on their mission to improve on the skills gained over the period of three months.

According to him, “anyone who puts his or her mind and efforts to get better at any sporting event will achieve the desired goal”, citing the great basketball player, Michael Jordan as an example.

Ifebigh also made reference to a profound martial arts proverb, which applies to all sports men and women, “learning a thousand different kicks would never be as effective as learning a single kick and practicing it a thousand times”. Practice, he admonishes, is the surest way of improving skills on the game.

He reiterated the organisation’s resolve to continue to support squash, which, according to him, he thought was an exclusive preserve of the military while growing up.

The Chairman of the Squash Section, Sir Semoore Badejo thanked the sponsor for being a valuable partner in promoting the game.

He disclosed that the second leg of the training session would commence in November, urging all members of the sectionto take advantage of the window of opportunity to learn squash and keep fit always.
