Rangers were crowned Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL), champions for the ninth time after a 2-1 victory over Ikorodu City at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena, Onikan, Lagos on Sunday.
On the same last Matchday of the season, Remo Stars, the defending champions of the just-concluded season, got relegated to the second-tier Nigeria National League following the survival battle by Owerri-based Kun Khalifat FC.
Fidelis Ilechukwu’s side started on the front foot, and took the lead through Chidiebere Nwobodo on the half hour mark.
Nwobodo doubled the visitors lead 10 minutes after the break.
Ikorodu City, who also needed a win to boost their chances of securing a place on the continent, reduced the deficit through Moses Ali two minutes before the hour mark.
Rivers United finished second after a 3-0 home win over Katsina United at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium, Port Harcourt.
Chijioke Mbaoma bagged a brace for Rivers United, while Aniekeme Okon scored the other goal.
In their delayed fixture, Kun Khalifat came from a goal down to beat already relegated Wikki Tourist 3-1 to increase their point haul from 46 to 49, leapfrogging Remo Stars, who managed only 47 points in the 38-week season.
The Ikenne-Remo side were joined in the trip down to the lower division by El-Kanemi Warriors, Bayelsa United and Wikki Tourist.
