The event, held at the Local Government Training School in Ibadan, was led by Musibau Babatunde, the state’s Commissioner for Budget and Economic Planning, who also serves as secretary of the Safer Committee.
According to Babatunde, the initiative is not just a government intervention but a strategic effort to reduce poverty and enhance welfare across all 33 local government areas.
Widows, people with disabilities, the elderly, and other underprivileged citizens were named as primary beneficiaries of the project.
He clarified that the distribution marked a symbolic handover of food items provided by the Aliko Dangote Foundation, forming part of the broader Sustainable Action for Economic Recovery (Safer) initiative launched by Governor Seyi Makinde.
He assured that every local government would be covered and all listed beneficiaries would be reached.
This initiative will cut across socially disadvantaged groups in the state.
Edero Ejiro, Head of Operations at the Aliko Dangote Foundation, delivered the donation on behalf of the organisation.
He revealed that the programme, which began in 2024, aimed to distribute one million bags of rice across Nigeria.
He lauded the Oyo State government for showing commitment to social inclusion and for facilitating smooth delivery to the most affected populations.
“Our chairman, Aliko Dangote, came up with this initiative last year. We did it then, and we are doing it now again,” Ejiro affirmed, adding that the foundation focuses on empowerment, nutrition, and education as part of its core mission.
The event concluded with a vote of thanks from Olufemi Timothy, Executive Assistant to the Governor on Disability Matters, who praised the state government and the Foundation for recognising the needs of the less privileged and acting decisively to address them.
