In the quest for justice and equality in Nigeria, one name stands out for his unwavering dedication and unrelenting passion: Auwal Musa Rafsanjani. Born in Kano, Rafsanjani’s journey into activism was inspired by Mallam Aminu Kano, a prominent political figure known for advocating for the downtrodden. The radical opposition political leader, teacher, poet, playwright, and trade unionist fplayed an active role during the transition from British colonial rule to independence, the First Republic, military rule, and the Second Republic. He died on 17 April 1983, aged 63 years.

Rafsanjani’s activism roots date back to his university days at Bayero University, Kano, where he studied Political Science and became involved in the Student Movement. He was elected as the Assistant-General Secretary of the National Association of Nigerian Students in 1992. This early start laid the foundation for a lifetime of advocacy and activism.

A legacy of advocacy

In 2005, Rafsanjani founded the Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre (CISLAC), a non-profit organization focused on promoting democratic governance through legislative advocacy. Under his leadership, CISLAC has become a leading voice in Nigeria’s civil society, engaging in policy reforms and human rights advocacy.

Rafsanjani’s leadership roles extend beyond CISLAC. He serves as the Chairman of the Board of Amnesty International Nigeria and was elected as the head of the Transition Monitoring Group in 2021. These positions underscore his commitment to ensuring electoral integrity and promoting human rights in Nigeria.

A life of purpose

Despite facing numerous challenges, including arrests and intimidation, Rafsanjani remains steadfast in his pursuit of a just society. His personal life reflects his dedication to family alongside his activism. As a public commentator, Rafsanjani has appeared on international media platforms such as Al-Jazeera, CNN, and BBC. His work has taken him around the globe, engaging with world leaders and philanthropists on issues affecting Africa.

Notable milestones

Under Rafsanjani’s leadership, CISLAC has achieved several notable milestones, including:

  • Legislative advocacy: CISLAC played a crucial role in the adoption of the Freedom of Information Act and the Public Procurement Law, significantly enhancing transparency and accountability in Nigeria
  • Electoral reforms: The organisation has actively advocated for amendments to the Electoral Act, ensuring more transparent and credible elections
  • Anti-corruption efforts: CISLAC has been a vocal advocate for anti-corruption policies, including the full implementation of the Proceeds of Crime Act and the Whistleblower Protection Bill
