A Nigerian dental expert, Mrs Damilola Esan Williams, has raised an alarm over a silent but serious threat to oral health.
According to Mrs Damilola, the continued use of old and frayed toothbrushes could be putting millions at risk of gum disease, bacterial infections, and even tooth decay.
Speaking during a public health awareness campaign, Dr. Williams emphasized that many people underestimate the dangers of using toothbrushes past their recommended lifespan.
‘Using a toothbrush for too long can have serious consequences for your oral health’, she said.
‘When bristles become frayed, they not only lose their effectiveness in cleaning teeth but can also damage the gums and harbor harmful bacteria’.
She explained that worn-out toothbrushes provide a breeding ground for bacteria, which can contribute to oral infections, gum disease, and other dental complications.
She stressed the importance of timely replacement and proper storage of toothbrushes as part of preventive oral care.
Experts recommend changing toothbrushes every three to four months or sooner if the bristles become visibly frayed.
In addition, users are advised to rinse toothbrushes thoroughly after use and store them upright in a clean, dry place.
‘Regular toothbrush replacement is a crucial step in maintaining good oral hygiene’.
Mrs Damilola added that ‘It’s a simple but effective way to prevent dental issues that could lead to more serious health problems’.
The warning comes as part of a broader push to improve oral hygiene practices in households across the country. Dental professionals are urging individuals to be more mindful of not just brushing frequency, but also the tools they use in their daily routines.
