The long-forgotten family of Nigeria’s former leader, Late General Murtala Ramat Muhammed received the delegation of Ekiti State Governor, Dr Kayode Fayemi at their family house in Yakassai community, Kano on Monday.
The team, led by the Convener of the Nigeria Patriotic Coalition (NPC), Hon. Yemi Akinbode also visited the tomb Masallachi Murtala where Chief Imam Kabiru led the delegation to pray for the repose of the soul of the General Muhammed, who was assassinated on 13th February 1976 while serving as Nigeria’s Head of State.
The NPC team included its Head of Finance, Dr. Mrs. Moji Yaya-Kolade, the Northwest coordinator, Malam Ishaq Ahmed, Kano State coordinator, Malam Kabara Suleiman and other NPC coordinators who had arrived earlier for its Northwest stakeholders’ meeting.
The delegation delivered Fayemi’s goodwill massage to the family of the former military leader, who Nigerians have fond memories of for the discipline, orderliness and anti-corruption thrust of his administration.
Apart from national monuments like the nation’s prime international airport named after him, General Muhammed’s family has long been neglected been successive governments.
The family, which included the former Head of State’s only living sister, Ibrahim Ramat therefore received Fayemi’s emissary with great happiness. They prayed for the Governor for being the only Nigerian leader that deemed it fit to remember the good deeds of the late military leader with the honour of a solidarity visit.
General Muhammed died at 37 years and ruled Nigeria for only 199 days. He remains one of Nigeria’s most loved leaders.
