The Federal Government and the Borno State Government have intensified efforts to secure the release of 44 schoolchildren abducted from Mussa community in Askira/Uba Local Government Area of the state.

Governor Babagana Zulum disclosed this on Friday when he met with the parents of the abducted pupils in Maiduguri.

The meeting followed an appeal by the parents for urgent government intervention to secure the safe return of their children.

Zulum expressed sympathy to the affected families and assured them of President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to securing the children’s release.

According to the governor, Tinubu had directed security agencies to intensify efforts to rescue the pupils and reunite them with their families.

He said the Nigerian Armed Forces and the Borno State Government were working together to achieve the objective.

“On behalf of the government and people of Borno, I once again extend my sympathies over what happened at Mussa Central Primary School,” Zulum said.

He said the incident occurred on 15 May, when about 44 primary school pupils were abducted from the school.

The governor assured the parents that the government would continue to explore every available avenue to secure the children’s safe return.

The meeting was attended by Senator Ali Ndume, who represents Southern Borno Senatorial District, as well as senior state government officials.

Among those present were the commissioners responsible for education and intergovernmental affairs, alongside other government officials.

The governor’s assurance comes as security agencies intensify efforts to locate the abducted pupils and secure their release.
