President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has welcomed Nigeria’s 4.43 per cent economic growth recorded in the second quarter of 2026, describing the latest Gross Domestic Product (GDP) figures as evidence that his administration’s economic reforms are beginning to deliver results.
Figures released by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) showed that real GDP growth increased from 4.23 per cent in the corresponding quarter of 2025 to 4.43 per cent in Q2 2026.
The latest data recorded growth across key sectors, including agriculture, manufacturing, and oil and gas, while the services sector remained the largest contributor to the country’s overall economic output.
In nominal terms, Nigeria’s GDP rose to N119.27 trillion during the quarter, representing an 18.43 per cent increase from the N100.7 trillion recorded in the same period a year earlier.
In a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu said the figures were significant given what he described as attempts by opposition groups to discredit his administration’s performance since it assumed office in May 2023.
The President said his government had spent the past three years pursuing difficult economic reforms aimed at stabilising the economy, arguing that the impact was now becoming visible through improved trade balances, stronger foreign reserves and an upgraded credit rating.
He also highlighted investments in roads, rail infrastructure and superhighways, as well as increased investor interest and higher oil and gas production. Tinubu further pointed to the reduction in prolonged disruptions to university education as another achievement of his administration.
The President said initiatives such as the NELFUND student loan scheme and the Creditcorp facility for civil servants were expanding access to education and credit.
According to him, the government would in the coming weeks introduce measures aimed at reducing transport costs, increasing food production and providing further relief for vulnerable Nigerians.
“Under our watch, the economy is on the irreversible path to experience even more growth that all homes will feel at the dining table and in their pockets,” Tinubu said.
He added that his administration remained focused on ensuring that economic growth translated into improved living conditions for Nigerians, while preventing any reversal of the gains recorded under his government.
