Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has rewarded Edo Queens with N50 million following the team’s triumph over Ghanaian side Ampem Darkoa Ladies in the 2026 WAFU-B Women’s Champions League.
Okpebholo announced the reward on Tuesday during a ceremony to present the team with the 2025/26 Nigeria Women’s Football League and 2026 WAFU-B Women’s Champions League trophies at the Festival Hall, Government House, Benin City.
Edo Queens played out a 2-2 draw with Ampem Darkoa Ladies after regulation time before securing a 4-1 victory in the penalty shootout.
The governor described the achievement as significant for Edo State and Nigeria, commending the players for their resilience, determination and fighting spirit throughout the competition.
Okpebholo said he was confident Edo Queens would prevail in the penalty shootout after observing the composure and strategy of the team’s goalkeeper.
He particularly praised the goalkeeper’s saves during the shootout, describing them as crucial to the team’s victory.
The governor also commended the coach, technical crew and other officials for their contributions to the team’s success.
“For me, this trophy matters to Edo people and the country. I must commend the players for their doggedness. I also want to thank the coaching crew and other officials.
“I want to reward the team with the sum of N50 million,” Okpebholo said.
Earlier, Chairman of the Edo Sports Commission, Amadin Enabulele, praised the team for its impressive run, saying the players had made the state proud.
“Our girls have truly done us proud. To win the Nigeria Women’s Football League and the WAFU-B championship in the same season is no small feat.
“It requires grit, unity, discipline, resilience and an unshakeable belief in oneself,” he said.
Enabulele also commended the club’s new management for maintaining the team’s progress while raising its standards.
He praised the coaches, technical crew and management team for their sacrifices and dedication, noting that they carried the hopes and aspirations of Edo residents throughout the competition.
