American racing driver Ugo Ugochukwu has made history after winning the 2026 FIA Formula 3 Championship with Campos Racing.
Born on April 23, 2007, in New York City, the 19-year-old secured the championship title at the Madring circuit on Sunday, September 13, following a dramatic battle for the crown.
Ugochukwu entered the final race level on points with British driver Freddie Slater, setting up a tense conclusion to the season.
His championship victory makes him the first Nigerian-American driver to win the FIA Formula 3 title. The achievement also marks the United States’ first FIA Formula 3 championship, further enhancing his reputation in international motorsport.
Ugochukwu now joins an impressive list of former Formula 3 champions who have progressed to Formula 1, including Oscar Piastri and Gabriel Bortoleto.
Formula 3 is regarded as an important development category for young drivers seeking to progress to Formula 2 and ultimately reach Formula 1.
Reflecting on the significance of his achievement and his heritage, Ugochukwu expressed pride in his Nigerian roots through his mother, Oluchi Onweagba.
“I’m super proud of my Nigerian roots, on my mom’s side,” he said.
The young driver also expressed appreciation for the growing recognition he has received from supporters across Africa as his career continues to attract international attention.
Born and raised in New York City, Ugochukwu is the son of Nigerian fashion model Oluchi Onweagba and her Italian husband, Luca Orlandi, an Italian fashion designer.
