The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has announced plans to constitute and inaugurate its Presidential Campaign Council ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The party said consultations on the composition of the council had reached an advanced stage, following meetings between its presidential candidate, Peter Obi, his running mate, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, and the party’s national leadership.
In a statement issued by its National Publicity Secretary, Osa Director, the NDC said Obi and Kwankwaso had been given the authority to nominate key officials of the campaign council in consultation with the party.
The positions to be nominated by the presidential and vice-presidential candidates include Director-General, Deputy Director-General (North), Campaign Spokesman, Deputy Spokesperson, Head of New Media, Finance Director and Deputy Finance Director.
The statement said, “Our Presidential Candidate, Mr Peter Obi and his running mate, Dr Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, shall nominate the Director-General of the Campaign, Deputy Director-General (North), the Spokesman of the Campaign, Deputy Spokesperson, Head of New Media, the Finance Director, Deputy Finance Director and several others in consultation with the party.”
“The party leadership has given a free hand to the presidential candidate and his running mate to make nominations,” it added.
According to the party, the Finance Director and Deputy Finance Director will work with the National Treasurer to manage campaign funds in accordance with transparency and accountability requirements, including the party’s obligation to render accounts to the Independent National Electoral Commission.
The NDC also said a full organogram for the campaign structure had been developed since August and made available to Obi and Kwankwaso for their input.
It added that nominations had also been received from stakeholders across the country as part of efforts to ensure broad representation in the campaign structure.
The development comes shortly after the Obi-Kwankwaso Movement, a support group backing the NDC ticket, unveiled a separate 59-member campaign structure.
The NDC has clarified that the movement’s structure is distinct from the party’s official Presidential Campaign Council, which is now being prepared for inauguration.
The party said the ongoing consultations were aimed at producing an inclusive campaign structure capable of coordinating its activities ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
