Enyimba secured their first victory of the Nigeria Premier Football League season with an emphatic 4-2 win over Shooting Stars in Aba on Wednesday, while Sporting Lagos and Ikorodu City played out a goalless draw in the rescheduled Lagos derby.

The result at the Enyimba International Stadium saw the hosts claim all three points after a dominant attacking display, while the two Lagos clubs shared the points at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena in Onikan.

Enyimba took control early when Richard Ezinna opened the scoring in the seventh minute.

The hosts continued to press and doubled their advantage through Damian Chibueze in the 29th minute.

Shooting Stars struggled to contain Enyimba’s attacking pressure, and Idris Abubakar added a third goal in the 36th minute to give the Aba side a commanding lead at half-time.

Enyimba continued where they left off after the interval, with Ifeanyi Ihemekwele scoring four minutes into the second half to make it 4-0.

Shooting Stars mounted a late comeback when Mustapha Adams Agba’a pulled one back in the 76th minute before Johnmark Aule scored in the first minute of added time.

The visitors’ late rally, however, was not enough to deny Enyimba their first win of the campaign.

The victory gives the Aba-based club an early boost as they seek greater consistency in the league.

Sporting Lagos, Ikorodu City share points

In Lagos, Sporting Lagos and Ikorodu City played out a 0-0 draw in their rearranged derby at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena.

Both sides adopted a cautious approach early in the match as they competed for control of midfield and struggled to create clear-cut opportunities.

Sporting Lagos attempted to build patiently and exploit the flanks, but Ikorodu City’s organised defence frustrated the hosts.

The visitors also threatened on the counter, although Sporting Lagos remained disciplined defensively to prevent them from making the most of their opportunities.

Both teams pushed for a winner after the break, with substitutions introduced to add greater attacking impetus.

Neither side, however, could find the decisive goal as the match ended goalless.

The result meant both clubs settled for a point, with neither able to claim local bragging rights.
