The Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, has warned judges who may serve on election petition tribunals ahead of the 2027 general elections to avoid political activities and maintain strict impartiality.
Kekere-Ekun gave the warning on Wednesday during the flag-off of the 2026/2027 legal year of the National Industrial Court in Abuja.
She explained that judges of the National Industrial Court could be appointed to serve on election petition tribunals in line with the legal framework governing the 2027 elections.
The CJN noted that election disputes often attract intense political interest and public scrutiny, making it essential for judges to uphold the highest standards of conduct and professionalism.
She urged judicial officers to be mindful of their personal relationships, public appearances and actions to avoid anything that could undermine confidence in their neutrality.
According to her, judges appointed to election petition tribunals would be closely monitored as the country prepares for the 2027 general elections.
“You will be monitored,” she warned.
Kekere-Ekun stressed that judges handling election-related disputes must ensure that politically sensitive cases are determined fairly and without bias.
She added that their conduct during the electoral period would be critical to preserving the integrity of the judiciary and maintaining public confidence in the administration of justice.
