President and Chief Executive Officer of HS Media Group, Taye Ige, has shared lessons from his entrepreneurial journey with young professionals at Rachisols’ Team Growth Training and Finish Strong ’26 programme in Lagos.

The session, held on Thursday, 15 October, brought together about twenty participants for an hour-long presentation on entrepreneurial leadership, drawing on Ige’s experience building HotSports and developing the businesses under HS Media Group.

Ige traced the origins of HotSports to his work presenting the sports segment of Morning Ride on NTA 2, Channel 5, in 1996. Although the segment lasted only five to seven minutes, it attracted attention and sponsorship opportunities that helped him recognise the commercial potential of sports media.

Air France sponsored his coverage of the 1998 FIFA World Cup draws in Marseille in December 1997 and the tournament itself the following year. While in France, an argument-based sports television programme inspired the format he subsequently introduced to Nigerian viewers.

HotSports first aired at 2:30 p.m. on the first Saturday of the last quarter of 1998. Early sponsorship support from Coca-Cola and UAC’s Gala helped sustain the programme, gradually drawing Ige into sponsorship procurement and sports media marketing.

He also explained how his original ambition to establish an all-sports television channel eventually gave way to the development of HS Studios. Advice from training faculty member Robert Patel, followed by an examination of Nigeria’s production needs, helped shape the decision to build the five-studio complex in Ikeja.

The presentation addressed difficult experiences as well as opportunities. Ige recounted how financing pressures, delayed foreign-exchange settlement and the disruption of COVID-19 threatened the business, ultimately requiring the liquidation of long-held assets to pay off debt and preserve the enterprise.

He drew lessons about assessing risk, understanding financial commitments and making difficult decisions under pressure.

Connecting his experience to the Rachisols team, Ige emphasised customer understanding, accountability, careful use of resources and cooperation across departments as responsibilities that support business growth.

Reflecting on the engagement, Ige expressed satisfaction at the opportunity to share his story with the young men and women serving as executives in an equally young company. He hoped they had taken away lessons that would serve them in their current responsibilities and in the future, should they choose to become entrepreneurs themselves.

Rachisols Group Managing Director, Ola Solomi, warmly introduced the guest speaker and delivered an appreciative vote of thanks following the presentation, which was well received by the audience.

The session formed part of a wider training programme addressing innovation, organisational culture and the development of Rachisols’ businesses.
