The price of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), popularly known as cooking gas, has continued to fluctuate in recent weeks, with retail prices in Abuja and its environs ranging between ₦1,300 and ₦1,700 per kilogram.

A market survey conducted on Saturday showed that major filling station operators, including AA Rano, Ranoil and MRS, sold the product at between ₦1,300 and ₦1,500 per kilogram.

However, prices at some smaller LPG retail outlets in Abuja were higher, ranging from ₦1,600 to ₦1,700 per kilogram.

The latest prices represent an increase from several weeks ago, when cooking gas reportedly sold for as low as ₦1,200 per kilogram.

Speaking on the price fluctuations, Lawal Taofeek, spokesperson for the Nigerian Independent Petroleum Company (NIPCO), attributed the changes to volatility in global petroleum product prices.

“It is due to fluctuations in global energy prices,” he told journalists in an interview on Saturday.

Meanwhile, LPG prices eased in August 2026 following price reductions by the Dangote Refinery and depot owners.

A factsheet released by the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) in August also indicated that LPG imports had increased by 44 per cent, rising to 1.3 million metric tonnes from 900,000 metric tonnes.

The latest price movements highlight continued uncertainty in Nigeria’s cooking gas market, with consumers facing varying retail rates across different outlets.
