Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has mourned the late National Leader of Afenifere, Pa Reuben Famuyide Fasoranti, who died at the age of 100, describing his passing as the end of an extraordinary era.
In a condolence message, Obasanjo said he received the news of Fasoranti’s death with a heavy heart, describing him as one of the last surviving figures of a generation that helped lay the foundation for modern Nigeria.
“It was with a heavy heart that I received the sad news of the transition of our revered patriarch, elder statesman, and the National Leader of Afenifere, Pa Reuben Famuyide Fasoranti, who has returned to his Maker at the glorious age of 100,” the message read.
Obasanjo said Fasoranti’s life demonstrated purposeful longevity, principled leadership and an unwavering commitment to the progress of the Yoruba nation and Nigeria.
He noted that the deceased began his career as an educationist, serving as a principal in several institutions and helping to shape the character and values of young Nigerians.
“As an educationist, Baba understood early on that building a nation required building its people. Long before he stepped into the turbulent waters of politics, he was in the classrooms, moulding minds, instilling discipline, and building characters as a Principal across various historic institutions,” he said.
The former president also recalled Fasoranti’s service as Commissioner for Finance in the old Ondo State under the Unity Party of Nigeria (UPN) administration, describing his tenure as an example of fiscal discipline, transparency and accountability.
According to Obasanjo, Fasoranti also played a unifying role in Afenifere during a period of division and national uncertainty, leading the Yoruba socio-political organisation with calmness and conviction.
He added that the late elder statesman stood against military dictatorship and remained a strong advocate for true federalism, justice and equity despite threats to his life.
On a personal note, Obasanjo recalled his visits to Fasoranti in Akure, saying their mutual respect remained intact even when they disagreed on political issues.
He also acknowledged the personal tragedies Fasoranti endured, including the killing of his daughter, Funke Olakunrin, noting that the elder statesman continued to demonstrate resilience and a commitment to peace.
Obasanjo said Fasoranti lived to see a century while retaining his intellectual sharpness, adding that his life and service had left a lasting legacy.
“We console ourselves knowing that he lived to see a full century, retaining his sharp intellect to the very end. He has run a good race; he has finished his course, and he has left behind a good name,” he said.
On behalf of his family, the former president extended condolences to the Fasoranti family, the government and people of Ondo State, and members of Afenifere.
He concluded by wishing the late elder statesman eternal rest.
