The House of Representatives has called on the Federal Government to strengthen Nigeria’s preventive and emergency health measures against Ebola Virus Disease following the reported confirmation of a case in Abuja.

The lawmakers also urged the immediate release of outstanding appropriated funds to relevant health agencies to improve the country’s preparedness and response to the disease.

The resolutions followed the adoption of a motion of urgent public importance sponsored by Amobi Ogah, who represents Isuikwuato/Umunneochi Federal Constituency of Abia State, during Wednesday’s plenary.

Moving the motion, Ogah described Ebola as a severe and potentially fatal infectious disease that requires early detection, effective infection prevention and control, and coordinated public health intervention to limit transmission and save lives.

He expressed concern over the reported case, which he said involved a woman who arrived in Abuja from Uganda.

“It is extremely disturbing that yesterday, 20 October 2026, an Ebola Virus case was confirmed in a woman arriving from Uganda in Abuja who tested positive. Health authorities traced 44 contacts for isolation and further tests,” the lawmaker said.

Ogah warned that delays in identifying suspected cases, conducting laboratory tests, isolating infected persons, tracing contacts and providing timely medical care could increase the risk of transmission and place additional pressure on the country’s healthcare system.

He also raised concerns about inadequate public awareness, shortages of infection prevention and control supplies, gaps in healthcare workers’ preparedness and limited emergency response capacity, saying such challenges could hamper efforts to contain the disease.

Presiding over the session, Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu led the House in unanimously adopting the motion.

The lawmakers called on the Federal Government to mobilise private, state and federal health agencies and place them on high alert to strengthen efforts to contain the reported outbreak.

They further urged the Federal Ministry of Finance to release all outstanding appropriated funds to relevant health agencies without delay, stressing that adequate funding was necessary to support their response operations.

The House said the resources would help agencies carry out essential activities, including disease surveillance, contact tracing, laboratory testing and other emergency interventions.

It also called on the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare and the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) to assess the funding required to strengthen national preparedness and response capacity in line with available epidemiological evidence and public health guidance.
