The Yobe State Government has disclosed that it provides 800 free dialysis sessions monthly to patients living with chronic kidney disease as part of efforts to improve access to specialised healthcare and reduce treatment costs.

The Chief Medical Director of Yobe State University Teaching Hospital, Professor Baba Waru Goni, disclosed this while presenting the hospital’s progress report on major healthcare interventions to the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Dr Mohammed Goje.

Goni said the initiative was part of the state government’s support for patients with chronic kidney disease, many of whom require regular dialysis to manage their condition.

He explained that providing free dialysis sessions had helped reduce the financial burden on patients and their families.

“The state government is providing 800 free dialysis sessions monthly to support patients living with chronic kidney disease and reduce the financial burden of treatment,” he said.

The CMD also disclosed that the hospital offered Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and Computed Tomography (CT) scan services at affordable rates, attracting patients from other states within the region and beyond.

He said the hospital’s diagnostic services had improved access to essential medical investigations, enabling patients to receive specialised healthcare at comparatively affordable costs.

Goni commended the state government for its support, noting that sustained investment in specialised medical services was necessary to strengthen the hospital’s capacity to meet residents’ healthcare needs.

In his response, Goje praised the management and medical personnel of the teaching hospital and other health institutions in the state for their efforts to expand access to specialised healthcare services.

He said the government recognised the financial and emotional challenges faced by patients with chronic kidney disease and their families.

“The government recognises the challenges faced by patients living with chronic kidney disease and their families. We will continue to support initiatives that make essential healthcare services more accessible and affordable,” Goje said.

The SSG assured the hospital’s management of the state government’s continued support, reaffirming the administration of Governor Mai Mala Buni’s commitment to strengthening healthcare institutions and improving service delivery.

He urged the management to ensure the effective use of available resources, maintain standards of care and improve diagnostic and treatment services to meet growing demand.

Goje also called on the hospital to build on its achievements through stronger institutional capacity, efficient service delivery and strategic partnerships to widen access to specialised healthcare.

He said the government’s investment in the health sector was aimed at improving residents’ wellbeing, reducing medical expenses for families and ensuring greater access to essential healthcare services within the state.
