A ponmo seller in Akure, the Ondo State capital, has been arrested and is expected to face prosecution after an environmental sanitation inspection team reportedly discovered buckets containing human faeces at a facility where cowhide was processed for sale to consumers.

A video circulating on social media showed the chairman of Akure South Local Government Area during an inspection of the processing centre located on Igboliki Street, Akure.

The footage showed two buckets allegedly containing human faeces inside the facility, prompting the council chairman to order the arrest of the seller and the immediate sealing of the processing centre.

The incident has raised concerns about hygiene standards in the processing and handling of ponmo, a popular cowhide delicacy consumed by many Nigerians.

It has also sparked questions about the safety of products processed at the facility and potentially supplied to markets for public consumption.
