Portugal have appointed Bernardo Silva as the new captain of the national team following Cristiano Ronaldo’s retirement from international football.

Ronaldo announced his retirement on Thursday, bringing an end to his 23-year career with the Portuguese national team.

According to The Touchline, the selection criteria for the captaincy include appointing the player with the highest number of international appearances.

Silva, who has made 115 appearances for Portugal and scored 14 goals, will now take over the armband from the former captain.

The midfielder, who plays for Manchester City, made his international debut in 2015 and has been part of Portugal’s successes in the UEFA Nations League, winning the competition in 2019 and 2025.

His appointment marks a new chapter for the Portuguese national team as it prepares to move forward following Ronaldo’s departure from international football.
