While it is granted that Minister Wike is doing a commendable job in transforming Abuja into a modern and befitting capital city, he owes it a duty to exhibit his leadership in a manner that aligns with civility and respect for the citizens he serves. His efforts to improve the Federal Capital are laudable, but that does not excuse the disrespectful and authoritarian approach he displayed in Lugbe.
The minister’s behavior—using words like “stupid,” “shut up,” and shouting at the top of his voice—was both unprofessional and unacceptable. Regardless of the legality of the structures in question, no public official should resort to insults and public humiliation when addressing citizens. Such actions reflect a lack of leadership, one that dismisses the principles of accountability and engagement crucial to effective governance.
Issues surrounding illegal structures should be addressed with due process and transparency, not with intimidation and demeaning outbursts. Minister Wike’s approach not only erodes the public trust but also alienates the very people whose cooperation is vital for the success of his urban renewal efforts.
Public service requires a standard of conduct that respects the dignity of all citizens, and in this instance, the minister has fallen woefully short. His behavior should be roundly condemned as it undermines the very principles of leadership and governance in a democratic society.
