The wife of Osun State Governor, Mrs. Titilola Adeleke, has called on the residents of the state to take advantage of the free testing sponsored by the Governors’ Forum and the World Health Organisation to get screened for diabetes and hypertension.
Adeleke spoke in Osogbo, Osun State, on Monday at the launch of ‘Project 10 Million,’ a national health campaign aimed at screening 10 million Nigerians for hypertension and diabetes.
The Osun First Lady, who also underwent screening at the event, noted that the initiative was part of the effort to combat the rising prevalence of hypertension and diabetes in the country.
She stated that the two ailments accounted for approximately 27 per cent of Nigeria’s annual deaths.
“Project 10 Million is a critical health initiative aimed at addressing the growing impact of Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs), particularly hypertension and diabetes.
“These diseases pose a serious threat to the well-being of our communities, contributing to 27 per cent of all annual deaths in Nigeria.
Seventeen percent of Nigerians between the ages of 30 and 70 are likely to die from these diseases. There is an urgent need for action to combat these diseases in our society.
“Today, I am pleased to announce the “Know Your Numbers, Control Your Numbers” campaign, an initiative led by Health Commissioners from all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory and approved by the Nigeria Governors’ Forum,” Adeleke further stated.
Providing more details about the initiative, she said that during the campaign, which will run from 28 October to 3 November, approximately 10 million Nigerians will be screened for hypertension and diabetes.
She subsequently urged residents, “Take advantage of this great opportunity to be examined for hypertension and diabetes. By knowing your numbers, you are taking a significant step towards managing your health. Together, we can make a difference and create a better future for all.”
Earlier, the state Commissioner for Health, Mr. Jola Akinola emphasised the state’s commitment to strengthening public health, adding that the project aligns with the government’s dedication to providing quality healthcare services for residents.
Highlighting some of the objectives of the campaign, Akinola stated that the initiative would raise public awareness of the risks and management of Non-Communicable Diseases, as well as provide immediate counselling and treatment.
