APC Defection

Following a recent meeting with President Bola Tinubu, a prominent member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Segun Sowunmi has revealed his possibility of defecting to the All Progressives Congress (APC), criticising his current party’s instability and praising APC leaders

Sowunmi, who was a spokesperson for former Vice President Atiku Abubakar’s 2023 presidential campaign, disclosed his leaning towards the ruling party, stating he would abandon the PDP if its leaders ‘insist on destroying’ the party.

During an interview on TVC’s Your View on Tuesday, Sowunmi articulated his admiration for the APC, particularly praising President Bola Tinubu and his predecessor, General Muhammadu Buhari (rtd.), for their political stability.

He contrasted their steadfastness with other leaders, noting that President Tinubu and Buhari ‘don’t jump from one political tendency to the other’.

‘Let me be very upfront. I’ve always said and I’ve said it many times over, if I ever leave the PDP, damn, I’m going to the APC. And why is that? Because at least I can accept that the two main pillars of the APC, President Muhammadu Buhari and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, are stable people. They don’t jump from one political tendency to the other, and have been damn stable too since 1998’, the PDP chieftain said.

Sowunmi further said that, should he decide to join the ruling party, his first step would be to consult his friend, APC’s National Publicity Secretary, Barrister Felix Morka to thoroughly review the party’s constitution before making any definitive move.

‘If I have to go to the APC, I will first of all visit my friend Felix Morka. I will have a sit down with him. I’ll ask for the constitution of the party, I will read it’, he said.

Sowunmi also condemned the ongoing coalition movement spearheaded by his former principal, Atiku, expressing his disagreement with it.

The former governorship candidate in Ogun State, who said he had spent approximately 27 years in the PDP, admitted that the coalition talks ‘irritate’ him, as they contribute to PDP’s instability.

‘One of the reasons why I’m irritated by this talk of coalition that they are doing is that I can’t imagine how decent political people will think that it is their responsibility to be looking for new platform every season. I don’t agree. So if I must leave, I must at least go to where I think they can also be stable forever’, he explained.

While previously a vocal critic of President Tinubu and his government, Sowunmi’s stance has notably shifted since his recent meeting with the President.

During an interview on Channels Television, he explained that his visit to the President allowed him to ask questions and gain a better understanding of the President’s policies.

He maintained that he could work with President Tinubu, citing their acquaintance since 1994. In a parting shot, he even claimed that President Tinubu is ‘smarter than all his political rivals’, including the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Mr. Peter Obi.
