Lagos State’s transportation landscape is set to witness a significant transformation with the expansion of the Red Line Rail Service. Starting on Monday, 10 February 2025, the rail service will increase its capacity, offering five morning and four evening trips daily. This enhancement is a testament to the state government’s commitment to improving mobility and providing better commuting options for residents.
Making the announcement over the weekend, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu said: ‘The Red Line service will expand its capacity, offering five mornings and four evening trips daily, up from two-morning trips. This enhancement ensures better commuting options for residents travelling between Agbado and Oyingbo.
‘This milestone reflects our commitment to improving mobility across Lagos. The arrival of three new train sets will further boost the Red Line’s capacity, reinforcing its role as a vital part of our integrated transport system.
‘The Red Line isn’t just a train service — it’s a game-changer for commuting in Lagos. We are building a city where connectivity drives economic growth and improves the quality of life for all residents’.
For commuters traveling between Agbado and Oyingbo, which encompasses modern and built-to-purpose terminals at Iju, Agege, Ikeja, Oshodi, Mushin and Yaba, the relief from unpredictable road traffic troubles are better forgotten. With a total journey time of just 50 minutes between Agabdo and Oyingbo, the rail service has reduced travel time drastically, making daily commutes faster and more convenient.
The reduced waiting times of two minutes at each station are also a welcome development for commuters who have grown accustomed to spending hours in traffic with its infamous road rages and law enforcement.
The expansion of the Red Line rail service is a milestone in the state government’s efforts to improve mobility across Lagos. The arrival of three new train sets as highlighted above by the governor will further boost the rail service’s capacity, reinforcing its role as a vital part of the state’s integrated transport system. This is a clear indication that the state government is committed to investing in infrastructure that improves the quality of life for residents.
The 37km long railway is more than just a train service; it’s a symbol of the state government’s vision for a more connected and prosperous Lagos. By providing efficient and reliable transportation, the rail service is unlocking opportunities for economic growth and development – particularly in the axis. Commuters can now travel quickly and easily, connecting them to commercial activities, job opportunities, education, tourism and healthcare services.
The impact of the Red Line rail service extends beyond just commuters. It’s also having a positive impact on the environment. By reducing the number of cars on the road, the rail service is helping to decrease air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions. This is a critical step towards creating a more sustainable and environmentally friendly Lagos.
The service expansion is also a testament to the state government’s commitment to investing in infrastructure that benefits all residents. By providing better commuting options, the rail service is helping to bridge the gap between different communities and socio-economic groups. This is a critical step towards creating a more inclusive and equitable Lagos.
As the state government continues to invest in transportation infrastructure, it’s clear that Lagos is on the move. This service is just one part of a larger vision for a more connected and prosperous Lagos. With the arrival of new coaches and the expansion of the rail service, commuters can expect even faster and more convenient travel options.
As Lagos continues to evolve and grow, it’s clear that the Red Line rail service will play a critical role in shaping the state’s transportation landscape. Joined by the ever expanding water transportation and BRT options, mobility continues to improve the happiness of commuters.
