A female inmate of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCS), Lagos State Command, Chinyere Okike is the best graduating student of the Peace and Conflict Resolution department, National Open University (NOUN).
According to a statement by the NCS, Okike earned a second-class upper degree in the course.
Another inmate, Afolabi Alegbe, a male, was awarded an MSc in the same course.
Eight inmates got Bachelor of Science certificates from the Lagos Command.
On behalf of the graduating inmates, Chibueze Nweke thanked the NCS’s Controller General, Haliru Nababa, and the Vice-Chancellor of NOUN, Prof. Olufemi Peters for the opportunity.
He pleaded for clemency for the graduating students so that they could give their quota to the country’s development.
At the certificate presentation ceremony, Lagos Command Controller, Adewale Francis Adebisi urged the inmates to imbibe the virtues of education.
According to him, incarceration should not stop them from dreaming, adding that they should use the ‘opportunity available while in detention to better their lives so that when they are released, they can contribute positively to the society’.
