With Saturday’s national elections fast approaching, the Fulani community in Kwara State at the weekend declared their supports for all the candidates of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
The presidential candidate will hold on 25 February with the PDP fielding former Vice President, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar. On the same day, elections will be conducted in the Senate and House of Representatives’ seats across the country, while the governorship and House of Assembly elections will take place on 11 March.
The declaration, which was made at the Ilorin residence of former Senate President, Dr Bukola Saraki. The delegation was led by a prominent leader of the Fulani community, Alhaji Usman Sule Jowuro-Lamba.
Over 200 Fulanis across the 16 Local Government Areas of the state were with him at the event.
Jowuro-Lamba said the political forays of the Kwara State-based Fulani dated back to about 50 years ago when their progenitors started romancing with the late political titan, Dr Olusola Saraki.
He added: “We want to continue in this way by declaring our support in Kwara State for all the PDP candidates seeking for elective posts in this year elections. We enjoyed all the dividends of democracy under Saraki. But today, the reverse is the case. We will vote from the hierarchy of presidency to that of the councillor for all the PDP candidates”.
The Fulani leader was ably assisted by two of his lieutenants – head of Fulani in Ajase-Ipo, Aduragba Suleiman; and Seriki Fulani from Bacita, Alhaji Aliyu Mohammed Oro.
Receiving the Fulani on behalf of Saraki, former Speaker of the state House of Assembly, Dr Alli Ahmad thanked them for adopting all the PDP candidates for the polls, while he promised them of adequate distribution of democratic dividends when voted to power.
