The 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence is an annual international campaign that kicks off on 25th November, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, and concludes on 10th December, which is the Human Rights Day.
Gender-based violence impacts individuals globally, affecting one in three women, regardless of age, race, or location, and affects physical or sexual intimate partner or non-partner sexual violence.
It’s crucial to understand the urgency of addressing this issue. It’s not just a women’s issue; it’s a human rights issue that impacts entire communities and societies.
Communities worldwide unite to raise awareness, challenge societal norms that perpetuate violence, and advocate for policy changes that protect survivors and hold perpetrators accountable.
Each year, the campaign focuses on specific themes to address different facets of gender-based violence. This year’s theme is Invest to Prevent Violence against Women and Girls.
To address the root causes of violence, create safer environments, and promote gender equality, I spoke to a gender and relationships expert, Olaide Fatayo, who emphasised the need to accelerate efforts in the fight against gender-based violence.
She stated that the media is working hard and that the community and religious institutions should stop spreading the illusion that individuals should stay in their marriages even if they are not satisfactory.
She added that violence is not exclusive to girls but also affects men, and that communities should be able to speak out against it on behalf of young girls.
She, however, advised all and sundry to always speak up in whatever situation they find themselves in.
As we wrap up today’s episode, remember that the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence is not just a campaign; it’s a call to action for each one of us. By breaking the silence and raising our voices, we contribute to a world where everyone can live free from fear and violence.
Thank you for joining us on this important journey. Until next time, let’s continue breaking the silence and working towards a future free from gender-based violence.
