The streets of Kaduna are buzzing with energy as residents, government officials, and community leaders come together to reclaim their environment.

The Kaduna State Government has officially revised its long-abandoned statewide sanitation exercise, a bold move aimed at restoring public hygiene and curbing environmental hazards.

The initiative, which swept through neighborhoods across the metropolitan area, saw participants clearing drains, removing refuse, and cleaning public spaces.

Authorities say this renewed commitment is part of a broader environmental safety strategy designed to combat indiscriminate waste disposal.

Commissioner for Environment, Abubakar Buba, and General Manager of Kaduna Environmental Protection Authority, Suleiman Ibrahim, emphasised the importance of the exercise.

‘We are not just introducing it by telling people to stay back at their houses from 7:00 to 10:00. Now, we will ensure compliance that people stay back at home and ensure that their surroundings are clean’, Buba said.

The government has provision for mobile courts to address non-compliance. ‘We have provision for mobile courts for those that will air because at the end of the day, you know definitely some people will not comply’, Ibrahim said.

Kaduna State Government won an award for being the neatest among Northwestern states of Nigeria in December 2024 and the most environmentally friendly state among the 36 states, including Abuja, in January 2025.

The overall turnout signals a promising start to what officials hope will become a sustained tradition, one that not only beautifies the city but also strengthens public health and community cohesion.
