The Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf, has expressed deep shock and heartfelt sympathy over the fire that engulfed some shops at the popular Kantin Kwari Textile Market on Saturday.

In a statement by the governor’s spokesman, Sunusi Tofa, Yusuf extended his sympathies to the affected traders, their families, and the entire community of Kano state.

He described the incident as a devastating blow to the state’s economic hub and shared in the grief of those who suffered losses.

The governor urged traders and market authorities to remain vigilant and strengthen safety measures to prevent future occurrences.

He emphasised the need for enhanced precautionary steps to protect both lives and property, stressing that safeguarding the market is essential to ensuring its continued role as a pillar of Kano’s economy.

The fire, which started around 7pm, began at Gidan Inuwa Mai Mai on Bayajidda Street and spread to several buildings within the market.

“Thanks to the rapid intervention of the Federal Fire Service, Kano State Fire Service, and additional reinforcements from Sabon Gari, Dawanau, and Singa Markets, the fire was successfully contained, preventing further destruction,” the statement read.

The governor commended the bravery and swift action of the fire services, private companies, and other volunteers involved in battling the blaze.

He called on all market stakeholders to work together in prioritising safety and implementing necessary measures to avoid a recurrence of such unfortunate events.

The governor reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to standing with the affected traders during this challenging time and assured them of the government’s support in mitigating the effects of the incident.
