It’s official! The Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) is now to be known as Nigeria Premier Football League, with the acronym, “NPFL” retains.
At its 79th general assembly in Uyo, the Akwa Ibom State capital, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) ratified the name change ahead of the commencement of the 2023/23 season.
“The congress approved the change of name of the Nigeria Professional Football League to the Nigeria Premier Football League”, NFF said in a communiqué.
The new board of the NPFL had paraded the league as the Nigeria Premier Football League, launching a new logo and new name for the league, but the NFF said that only the congress has the power to change the name.
The 2023/24 NPFL season was scheduled to kick-off last Saturday with a curtain raiser between 3SC and Plateau United in Ibadan. But the league suffered another postponement due to what the board called exigencies around its sponsorship.
A new date for the kick-off is expected to be announced soon.
Enyimba won the league last season after the regular (abridged) season and the Super 6 playoffs that followed in Lagos, to be crowned champions for a record nine times.
