A constitutional lawyer, Dr. Tunji Abayomi has advocated for a people’s constitution instead of the present Decree 24, enacted by the military as the constitution of the country.

On a radio programme monitored in Akure, the Ondo State capital, Abayomi said that the Nigerian peoples should come together and fashion out a true constitution that would be good for their different political zones.

According to the constitional expert, the best way to restructure the country is by calling on the National Assembly to make laws for the peoples of Nigeria to come together and make laws that would suit each region anf bring about healthy competitions among the various federating units.

He said that that document produced could be termed, “United Nations of Nigeria” constitution.

He said that the experiences witnessed during the Western regional government of Chief Obafemi Awolowo should be replicated in order to move the country forward.

Abayomi recalled that it was during the Awolowo period that the Yoruba people advanced in many spheres of endeavours such as economy, education, sports, communications and industrialisation before the military government forcefully took everything over.

He advised, that the Federal Government should intervene in the agricultural sector holistically to ensure mass cultivation of food crops that would bring down the present high costs of food prices.

He admonished the state governments to invest in agriculture to considerably reduce poverty and hunger.
