Northern governors to launch regional security trust fund

The Northern States Governors’ Forum has resolved to establish a regional Security Trust Fund to tackle the growing security challenges in the region.

The fund, which will be capitalised with a monthly contribution of One Billion Naira from each state and local government, aims to support security efforts and enhance stability in the North.

The decision was made during a joint meeting of the Northern States Governors’ Forum and the Northern Traditional Rulers’ Council, held in Kaduna on Monday.

The meeting, attended by governors of the 19 Northern States and their royal highnesses, focused on addressing pressing security issues affecting the region.

The governors also called for a six-month suspension of mining exploration in Northern Nigeria to address the security crises linked to illegal mining.

They recommended that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu direct the Minister of Solid Minerals to suspend mining activities and subject all mining licenses to revalidation.

The Forum reaffirms support for establishment of State Police Condolences extended to affected states and victims of Boko Haram attacks

The Forum commended the Federal Government for efforts to secure the release of abducted children and tackle insurgency. They also praised the sacrifices of security personnel battling violent insurgencies across the country.

The meeting reaffirmed the governors’ commitment to unity, security, stability, and development in the region, emphasizing the need for cooperation to overcome pressing challenges.
