President of the Libyan Football Federation, Abdelhakim Al-Shalmani, has resigned from his position.
Al-Shalmani stepped down from his position during a regular meeting of the Federation’s General Assembly.
The Libya Observer, an English and Arabic online newspaper based in Tripoli, Libya, said Al-Shalmani announced his resignation on Sunday.
He was quoted as saying, “I do not want to be part of the failure in Libyan sports.
“We faced difficulties during the previous period.
“I thank all members of the General Assembly, and I forgive everyone from all segments of the sports sector.
“I have a history in the International, Arab and African Federation, and no one can deny that.”
This is coming amid the heightened tension between the Super Eagles of Nigeria and the Libyan national team ahead of Tuesday’s All African Cup of Nations qualifier.
The Libyan authorities had subjected the Super Eagles to ‘inhumane treatment’ upon arrival in the country.
Super Eagles were abandoned at Al Abraq International Airport airport for over 15 hours, in what seemed like a retaliation.
But the Nigerian Football Federation director of communications, Ademola Olajire, had disclosed that the team was on its way back to Nigeria.
Addressing the issue, the Libyan Football Federation said the Nigerian team was delayed due to routine air traffic and logistical challenges and not deliberate foul play.
