The Taraba State House of Assembly on Wednesday elected Hon. Kizito Bonzena as a new Speaker at an emergency sitting of the House. He replaces Rt. Hon. Joseph Albasu Kunini, who reportedly resigned.

Bonzena represents Zing State constituency. He was the Chief Whip of the House.

The letter of resignation of the former Speaker was read by the Deputy Speaker, Hon. Hamman Adama of Daka State constituency.

Adama, who presided over the emergency sitting, called for the nomination of the new Speaker, and members unanimously nominated and elected Bonzena as the new Speaker.

Kunini’s last official function was on Monday when he presented the 2023 budget to Governor Darius Ishaku for his assent. He was elected Speaker in 2019 after the resignation of Rt. Hon. Abel Peter Diah

The political realignment that saw the former speaker resign his position is not yet clear.
