President Bola Tinubu, on Friday, appointed the Chief Executive Officer of Financial Reporting Council of Nigeria, Mr. Jim Osayande Obazee as Special Investigator to investigate the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and related entities.

In the letter signed by the President, he said the appointment takes effect immediately, and the Special Investigator is to report directly to his office.

He said that continuing the action is in continuation of the “fight against corruption”.

Although the President’s letter stated that the terms terms of engagement would be communicated to the Special Investigator in due course, it stipulated that the new appointee is to “take steps to ensure the strengthening and probity of key Government Business Entities (GBEs), further block leakages in CBN and related GBEs and provide a comprehensive report on public wealth currently in the hands of corrupt individuals and establishments (whether private or public).

“You are to investigate the CBN and related entities using a suitably experienced, competent and capable team and work with relevant security and anti-corruption agencies to deliver on this assignment. I shall expect a weekly briefing on the progress being made”.

The substantive CBN Governor, Mr. Godwin Emefiele was suspended from office on 9th June and is in the custody of the Department of State Security. Last week, he was arraigned at a Federal High Court in Lagos over over alleged possession of firearms.
