At least, 1,000 students from both public and private tertiary institutions in Abia state are expected to participate in the first Abia Tertiary Sports Fiesta, which will begin on 25 November and ends on 28 November, 2025.

The state Commissioner for Tertiary Education, Prof Uche Eme Uche, who made the disclosure, said the fiesta, organised by the state Ministry of Tertiary Education in collaboration with the Ministry of Youth and Sports Development, would feature 26 different sporting activities.

He said the aim of the fiesta was not only to unite the students, but also to promote extra-curricular activities among the youth, and harness their potential into useful endeavours.

Governor Otti, according to Uche, has approved the sum of N500,000 for each participating school to enable them prepare adequately for the competition.

‘We call it sports fiesta because it is not going to be the traditional games competitions, where everybody is driving, working hard and trying to beat each other just to get medals. This is going to be like a festival, a festive activity to celebrate sports and sportsmen and also trying to identify talents’, Uche said.

The Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Nwaobilor Ananaba, thanked the governor for his unwavering support to youth development and education and for supporting the sports fiesta.

Ananaba said the sports fiesta is part of the governor’s idea to make the youth feel the impact of his administration.
