The Technical Director of the Access Bank Lagos City Marathon, Mr Yusuf Alli has reaffirmed that the 2023 edition of the Access Bank Lagos City Marathon will hold on Saturday 4th February 2023.

Alli issued a statement on Tuesday dismissing an online media report that the race has been moved to 12th February.

The three-time Olympian and 1990 Commonwealth Games gold medalist described the report of a change in date as “false, misleading, embarrassing and incorrect. There is no truth about such report.  Especially when the reporter didn’t confirm the report from the management of Nilayo Sports Management Limited, the owners of the race”.

Alli, who is also African record holder in long jump for upwards of 27 years before it was broken, emphasised that “the correct date for the 2023 edition of the Access Bank Lagos City Marathon is Saturday, 4th February 2023”.

He said that the special features that may possibly come with the Access Bank Lagos City Marathon is the upliftment to the Gold Label status from the Silver Label status, which the management had applied for and is “already receiving positive responses and just waiting for the World Athletics confirmation before the 4th February 2023 race date for the new status, the highest by an African country’s marathon races.

Last month, the Access Bank Lagos City Marathon submitted an application for an upgrade to become the biggest and highest rated full road race in Africa.

Alli, who submitted the request at the headquarters of the World Athletics in Monaco, France, said then that the Access Bank Lagos City Marathon has met all the criteria and confident that the World Athletics would grant the prayers.
