Gunmen killed three residents and injured eight others on Tuesday, 30 December, in Akunza Ashige community, Lafia Local Government Area (LGA) of Nasarawa state.
The Nasarawa state police command confirmed the incident on Wednesday, noting that two victims died at the scene, while a third person later succumbed to injuries at a hospital on Wednesday.
The command’s spokesperson, Ramhan Nansel, said the attack prompted an immediate security response after a distress call was received by the command.
According to him, the commissioner of police, Shetima Jauro Mohammed, swiftly deployed mobile police operatives and other tactical units to the area to restore calm and prevent further violence.
‘During the response operation, two corpses were recovered, while nine injured persons were rescued and taken to nearby hospitals for medical treatment.
‘One of the injured later died in the early hours of Wednesday’, Nansel said.
He added that the police commissioner has ordered the deputy commissioner of police in charge of the state criminal investigation department and the assistant commissioner of police overseeing operations to carry out a thorough investigation to identify and apprehend those responsible for the attack.
The police assured residents of Akunza Ashige and surrounding communities that efforts are ongoing to bring the perpetrators to justice and urged the public to remain calm while providing useful information to security agencies.
