A committee established by the Akarigbo and Paramount Ruler of Remoland to oversee the proposed state creation from the old Ijebu Province has submitted its report, recommending Sagamu as the capital of the new state.
The committee also proposed ‘Remo-Ijebu’ as the name for the new state.
Chairman of the Committee, Aare Kola Oyefeso, presented the 66-page memorandum to the monarch at his palace in Sagamu.
The committee emphasized that the Remo people are distinct from the Ijebu, having migrated from Iremo Quarters in Ile-Ife, and will not allow their distinct identity to be subsumed under any guise.
It further highlighted that the request for state creation is unique, as Ogun East, also known as the Ijebu Province, remains the only pre-independence province yet to be established as a state.
After extensive consultations, the committee also advocated for the creation of additional local governments to accommodate the increasing population, particularly due to migration from neighboring Lagos State.
The communiqué states: ‘The Remo people are distinctive from the Ijebus, having migrated from Iremo Quarters, Ile-Ife, and maintaining strong ties with their ancestral roots’.
‘The memorandum underscores the Remo people’s firm position that any attempt to diminish their identity in the proposed state will not be acceptable’.
‘Empirical data supports the selection of Sagamu as the capital, given the exponential growth and development in Remoland over the last three decades’.
‘The issue of making Remoland or Sagamu the commercial capital is already settled by providence and does not require further endorsement’.
Oyefeso urged Governor Dapo Abiodun and Senator representing Ogun East, Otunba Gbenga Daniel, to support the aspirations of the Remo people, stating that their legacy will be judged by posterity in due time
