The Police command in Delta State has announced that it impounded 25 vehicles for not having the tinted glass permit, despite a suit challenging the legality of the policy.
In a post shared via X on Friday, the command published the pictures of the impounded cars.
Last Thursday, the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) commenced the enforcement of the tinted glass permit policy across the nation.
However, the Federal High Court sitting in Warri, Delta State, on Friday ordered the NPF and the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) to suspend the enforcement of the tinted glass permit by vehicle owners.
The court asked the police and the IGP to maintain the status quo and ‘respect judicial processes pending further proceedings in the matter’.
The court issued the interim order as hearing opened in the suit instituted by a legal practitioner, John Aikpokpo-Martins against the IGP and the NPF.
He approached the court to challenge the legality of the new tinted permit enforcement.
The policy, which was initially billed to take off on 1 June before being shifted to 2 October, requires motorists to obtain an annual permit for tinted glasses through a digital portal (possap.gov.ng).
However, the policy has been met with criticism, as the Nigerian Bar Association Section of Public Interest and Development Law (NBA-SPIDEL) filed a public interest suit at the Federal High Court Abuja last month to challenge its legality.
In a letter addressed to the IGP, Kayode Egbetokun, on 1 October, NBA-SPIDEL faulted the decision to enforce the tinted glass permit policy despite a suit against it.
Force Public Relations Officer, Chief Superintendent Benjamin Hundeyin said that position was misleading, describing it as ‘an attempt to cast aspersions on the image, integrity, and lawful operations of the force’.
