The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has mourned the passing of Dan Agbese, veteran journalist and co-founder of Newswatch magazine.

Agbese, a renowned columnist and one of Nigeria’s most influential media figures, died on 17 November, aged 81.

In a condolence message by the president of the NUJ, Alhassan Yahya, the union said Agbese’s demise is a profound loss not only to the media industry but to the entire nation.

The NUJ described Agbese as ‘a quintessential journalist, a courageous voice, and a principled editor whose commitment to truth, integrity, and public service shaped generations of media professionals’.

‘As a co-founder of Newswatch magazine, he stood firmly for ethical journalism and national accountability, leaving behind a legacy that will endure for decades’, the statement reads.

‘In recognition of his immense contributions to the profession, the national secretariat of NUJ last year conferred on Mr Agbese the Media Icon honour at a colourful event in Lagos.

‘We extend our deepest condolences to his family, colleagues, friends, and the wider media community.

‘May his contributions continue to inspire us, and may the Almighty grant his soul eternal rest’.
