The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has sealed an Ikeja Electric office over what it described as persistent violations of consumer rights and repeated failure to comply with regulatory directives.

The enforcement operation, conducted on Thursday, was led by Engr. Idayat Olorungbebe, who represented the commission’s Director of Surveillance and Investigation, Mrs. Bola Adeyinka.

Olorungbebe explained that the action followed Ikeja Electric’s refusal to implement a binding resolution earlier issued by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC).

The directive required the company to separate a Maximum Demand account into 20 individual non-MD accounts, one for each of the 19 residential units owned by the complainant and an additional account for the service connection, and to properly meter and connect each unit.

Despite multiple meetings, formal letters and a Compliance Notice issued by the FCCPC in October 2025 with a seven-day ultimatum, the company allegedly failed to carry out the directive.

The Commission noted that the complainant has been without power supply for more than two and a half years, even after meeting all financial and procedural requirements demanded by Ikeja Electric. As a result, the 19 residential units have remained uninhabitable.

Invoking its powers under Sections 17, 18, 124, 150 and 155 of the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Act (FCCPA) 2018, the FCCPC said it moved to enforce compliance after exhausting all avenues for voluntary adherence.

Olorungbebe stressed that sealing the premises was a measured step taken only after the company repeatedly failed to act, adding that the Commission deliberately exempted the control room to prevent disruptions to electricity supply for other customers within the Ikeja Electric network.

‘The seal will remain until the company fully complies with the directives of both NERC and the FCCPC and submits verifiable evidence of compliance’, she said.

The Commission reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding consumer rights and warned that it will not hesitate to take firm action against service providers who obstruct or delay access to essential services.
