President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has congratulated Nigerian football administrator Samson Adamu on his historic appointment as Acting General Secretary of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), describing it as a proud moment for Nigeria and the West African subregion.

Adamu’s appointment, announced on 29 March 2025, marks the first time a Nigerian has occupied the top administrative position in CAF since its establishment in 1957. He assumes the role in an acting capacity following the departure of Veron Mosengo-Omba.

In a statement on Saturday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu described the development as a significant milestone for Nigerian sports and a strong affirmation of the country’s enduring leadership and influence in African football administration.

He commended Adamu’s track record of excellence, professionalism, and dedication, particularly his role in organising and delivering major CAF competitions, which he said have helped elevate the standard of football events across the continent.

‘The appointment is a testament to Mr Adamu’s competence and commitment to the growth of football in Africa’, the President noted, expressing confidence in his ability to strengthen the organisation’s operations.

President Tinubu further linked the development to his administration’s broader agenda on sports development, youth empowerment, and national unity, noting that the recognition of a Nigerian at such a level underscores the country’s growing global competitiveness.

He expressed optimism that Adamu would deploy his experience, strategic insight, and administrative expertise to advance the growth of football across CAF’s 54 member associations.

The President also assured the new CAF Acting General Secretary of Nigeria’s full support as he takes on the responsibility, wishing him success in the role.
