The by-elections in some parts of the country have resulted in victories for the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
PDP’s Hon. Olaka Nwogu won Saturday’s election to fill the vacant Rivers Southeast senatorial seat by recording 47,961 votes, while Beke Fabeke of the Action Alliance got 1.175 votes, Osarosaka Ebenezer of the APC received 1,647 votes, while Sam Bariboa of the Labour Party (LP) scored 367 votes.
The election was held to fill the vacancy created by the death of Senator Barinada Mpigi, which occurred four months ago.
Nwogu is aligned with the PDP faction backed by the Minsiter of the Federal Capital Territory, Barrister Nyesom Wike.
Nwogu, who represented Tai/Eleme/Oyigbo federal constituency in the House of Representatives from 1999 until 2011 under the PDP platform, promised to provide ‘effective representation’ for the senatorial district.
He was elected into the Senate in 2015 after defeating Senator Magnus Abe of the APC, but the Court of Appeal nullified his victory, and he subsequently lost the ordered re-run election.
For the Nasarawa North senatorial district, Danladi Envulu-Anza of the APC was declared the winner, and will not take the seat vacated via death by Senator Godiya Akwashiki.
In Enugu State, Chief Ikeje Asogwa of the APC emerged the winner of the Enugu North Senatorial District by-election.
He polled 162,360 votes to defeat his closest rival, Chief Nestor Ezeme of the PDP who scored 9,299 votes.
The by-election was conducted to fill the vacancy created by the death of 62-year-old Senator Okey Ezea.
Chika Idoko Emmanuel of the ADC polled 1,676, while Kingsley Aneke of the Boot Party polled 1,607 votes.
Others were Ejike Simon Eze of the LP with 1,027 votes, OssElias Okwudiri Ossai of the NDC (3,129 votes) and while Charles Ugochukwu of the Peoples Redemption Party (667 votes).
Maku, however, called for the cancellation of the by-election over alleged widespread irregularities.
He alleged non-adherence to electoral laws by INEC officials during the exercise.
He said that the Returning Officer for the election failed to address issues of fraud and manipulation of the election raised by LP agents.
