South Africa and Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Jayden Adams has died at the age of 25, just weeks after representing his country at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The cause of his death has not been disclosed.

The tragic news was confirmed on Saturday by the South African Football Players Union (SAFPU), which said it was “devastated by the untimely passing” of the talented midfielder. Tributes have also poured in from South African football authorities and government officials, who described Adams as one of the country’s brightest young talents.

Adams featured prominently for Bafana Bafana during the 2026 World Cup, playing in the group stage as South Africa reached the knockout rounds for the first time in the nation’s history.

His mentor, Brendine Johnson, described the midfielder’s death as a devastating shock, saying the family is struggling to come to terms with the loss.

“He was really positive about returning after the World Cup and being able to continue, knowing what lies ahead. He was prepared. He loved spending his time at home with his family,” Johnson said.

He added, “Nobody expected this. At this moment, I don’t even have words to say, but we ask that the family’s privacy be respected.”

Adams began his professional career with Stellenbosch FC before joining Mamelodi Sundowns in 2025, where he helped the club win the CAF Champions League. He made his senior international debut for South Africa in 2022 and went on to establish himself as a key figure in the national team.

The football community continues to mourn the loss of the midfielder, with tributes highlighting both his talent on the pitch and his character off it.
