Nigeria have qualified for the 2026 African Nations championship after extending their unbeaten run at the Zone 3 qualifiers in Abidjan, Ivory Coast.
The Nigerian team secured their place at the continental tournament, scheduled to take place in the Democratic Republic of Congo in September, with a hard-fought 3-1 comeback victory over Benin Republic on Friday, 17 July.
Nigeria came from behind after losing the opening set 21-25 to claim the next three sets 25-21, 25-15 and 25-20, completing another impressive performance in the qualifying tournament.
The victory ensured that Nigeria finished the Zone 3 qualifiers unbeaten, underlining the team’s consistency and determination throughout the competition.
After a slow start against Benin Republic, the Nigerians responded strongly, dominating the remaining sets to seal qualification for the continental championship.
The team’s unbeaten run has raised expectations ahead of the African Nations Championship, where they will seek to make a significant impact against the continent’s best sides.
With qualification now secured, Nigeria’s attention will turn to preparations for the tournament in the Democratic Republic of Congo as they aim to challenge for continental honours in September.
