The Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) BEECROFT has handed over 18 bags of suspected cannabis sativa, weighing approximately 756 kilogrammes, to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).

The handover took place on Friday at the NNS BEECROFT parade ground in Apapa, Lagos.

Speaking to journalists, the Commander of NNS BEECROFT, Commodore Aiwuyor Adams-Aliu, said the illicit drugs were recovered during separate intelligence-led operations carried out within the command’s operational area over the past few months.

He described the handover as another milestone in the Navy’s ongoing efforts to combat maritime crime.

According to Adams-Aliu, five bags of suspected cannabis sativa were intercepted at Abule Osun on 7 April 2026, while two bags were recovered at Ikare Island on 13 April. A further 11 bags were seized at Alpha Beach on 15 July, bringing the total to 18 bags with a combined weight of about 756 kilogrammes.

He attributed the successful operations to the Nigerian Navy Western Regional Control Centre, popularly known as Falcon Eye, an advanced maritime surveillance system that provides extensive monitoring of Nigeria’s coastal waters.

Adams-Aliu explained that the integrated surveillance platform combines long-range cameras, sensors and other advanced technologies capable of tracking activities beyond the physical reach of naval patrol boats.

He said the recoveries demonstrated the vigilance, professionalism and operational readiness of NNS BEECROFT personnel in safeguarding Nigeria’s maritime domain.

The commander added that the achievements reflected the technological transformation championed by the Chief of the Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Idi Abbas, whose vision places emphasis on intelligence gathering and enhanced surveillance capabilities.

He also reaffirmed the Navy’s commitment to strengthening collaboration with sister security agencies, particularly the NDLEA, noting that NNS BEECROFT, under the Western Naval Command led by Rear Admiral Abubakar Mustapha, would continue intelligence-driven operations against drug traffickers and other maritime criminals.

Receiving the seized drugs on behalf of the Commander of the NDLEA Marine Command, Commander Narcotic Morrison Udo, the Deputy Commander of the NDLEA Marine Command, Commander Narcotic Luka Yerima, commended the Nigerian Navy for its continued partnership and support in the fight against illicit drug trafficking.
