FIFA has warned that Nigeria’s qualification for the 2030 FIFA World Cup will depend largely on stability and the development of a robust football structure.
The world football governing body, in a statement on Wednesday, acknowledged Nigeria’s impressive football talent production line but stressed the need for a stable system capable of delivering consistent performances.
The Super Eagles failed to qualify for the 2026 World Cup after missing out on the tournament for the second consecutive edition.
Eric Chelle’s side finished second behind South Africa in Group C of the CAF qualifiers but suffered defeat to the Democratic Republic of Congo in the continental play-off final.
Reflecting on Nigeria’s football potential, FIFA noted that the country continues to produce talented players but needs structural stability to translate that potential into consistent success.
“Nevertheless, with the country’s vast footballing production line, Nigeria’s potential remains enormous,” FIFA stated.
The football governing body added: “Making it to the 2030 showpiece will therefore hinge less on ability than on stability in the shape of a robust structure that paves the way for reliable performances.”
The statement is likely to renew discussions about the administration and organisation of football in Nigeria, with the country expected to begin preparations for the next World Cup qualification cycle.
For the Super Eagles to return to the global stage in 2030, FIFA’s position suggests that maintaining continuity, strengthening football administration and building a reliable national team structure will be as important as the individual quality of the players available to the country.
