Senate President Godswill Akpabio has assured Nigerians that the administration of President Bola Tinubu is intensifying efforts to address the country’s insecurity challenges.
Akpabio expressed optimism that insecurity, including terrorism, banditry and kidnapping, would soon become a thing of the past.
He spoke on Wednesday while receiving members of the Ladies Golf Association of Nigeria, led by its National President, Dr Lima Ahmed, during a courtesy visit to the National Assembly in Abuja.
His remarks were contained in a statement issued by his Special Assistant on Media, Jackson Udom.
Nigeria has continued to face widespread security challenges, with several states recording attacks, kidnappings and other violent incidents in recent months.
The Federal Government has repeatedly assured Nigerians that it is intensifying military operations and other security measures to restore peace across the country.
Speaking during the visit, Akpabio cited the recent rescue of schoolchildren abducted in Oyo State as evidence of the administration’s commitment to tackling insecurity.
“As Nigerians, we are all aware of the insecurity challenges that we are currently facing. All I can say is that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is giving the situation its utmost attention, and that is what led to the recent release of the school children that were abducted in Oyo State,” he said.
“The current administration is doing a whole lot. I can assure you that very soon, the issue of security would be a thing of the past. Don’t rely on what you hear or see on social media. They are not a true reflection of what is happening in our country,” Akpabio added.
The Senate President also spoke about women’s participation in politics, attributing the reluctance of some women to support female candidates to the conduct of certain women who previously held public office.
He argued that the actions of some female political office holders had negatively affected the prospects of other women seeking elective positions.
Akpabio also pledged the support of the National Assembly for the forthcoming international ladies golf tournament scheduled to take place at the IBB International Golf and Country Club in Abuja.
Earlier, Ahmed thanked the Senate President for receiving the delegation and formally invited him to attend the tournament.
She also decorated Akpabio as the Grand Patron of the association.
