The National Executive Committee of the Okun Development Association (ODA), the apex socio-cultural organisation representing the Okun-Yoruba people of Kogi State, has paid a solidarity visit to the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Joash Ojo Amupitan, SAN, at the Commission’s headquarters in Abuja.
The delegation was led by the President-General of the association and former Nigerian High Commissioner to Sri Lanka, Ambassador Akenson Rotimi, and comprised senior officials of the association, including Deputy President-General (North), Alhaji Ibrahim Adoga; National Secretary, Elder Michael Oluwadare Owonuwa; Secretary of the Elders Council, Araba Rufus Aiyenigba; National Social Secretary, Dr Ayo Moses; National Treasurer, Prince Dayo Akanmode; Abuja Liaison Officer, Hon. Bolanle Amupitan; and Lokoja Liaison Officer, Mr Toyin George.
Also on the delegation were prominent Okun leaders, including former Kwara State Commissioner for Education, Dr David Oluwayomi Atte; former Kogi State Government Secretary, Barrister Shola Ojo; Chief J.O. Yusuf; and Barrister Deji Aina.
Speaking during the visit, Ambassador Rotimi congratulated Professor Amupitan on his appointment as INEC Chairman, describing it as a recognition of his distinguished career, professional integrity and contributions to national development. He also expressed appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the appointment.
The ODA President-General said the association was confident in Professor Amupitan’s ability to provide effective leadership for the electoral commission and strengthen public confidence in Nigeria’s electoral process. He noted that the INEC Chairman had, over the years, contributed significantly to the development of the Okun community through his support for the association’s activities.
Responding, Professor Amupitan expressed gratitude to the delegation for the visit, describing it as a source of encouragement for both himself and the Commission. He said the goodwill, prayers and support of his people remained invaluable as he undertook the responsibility of leading the nation’s electoral body.
While acknowledging President Tinubu for the confidence reposed in him, the INEC Chairman said his appointment called for humility and dedication to national service. He reaffirmed his commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s democracy and urged the Okun people to continue participating actively in the electoral process by exercising their civic responsibility.
Professor Amupitan also assured Nigerians of the Commission’s commitment to conducting credible elections, stating that “elections will count” under his leadership.
During a closed-door session, Secretary of the ODA Elders Council, Araba Rufus Aiyenigba, commended the INEC Chairman for what he described as improvements in staff welfare and the working environment at the Commission since assuming office. He said the changes had boosted staff morale and created a more conducive atmosphere within the organisation.
The delegation concluded the visit with prayers for divine wisdom, strength and guidance for Professor Amupitan as he leads the Commission in fulfilling its constitutional mandate.
